Durango

The State of Durango is Mexico’s fourth largest state, located in the northwest central portion of the country. Durango has very interesting geography – mountains, deserts, lakes, rivers, timber, mining sites, and miles of great hiking and biking trails. To the west you will find the heavily forested mountains of the Sierra Madre Occidental, with numerous 10,000 foot peaks. To the east (within the state) there is one of the driest sections of the Chihuahua desert, The “Zona del Silencio.” Between these two extremes are the plains and valleys of the State of Durango. There are numerous lakes, rivers, stream, and fishing spots for the outdoors person.

Durango is a lumber producing state with an annual output of over a quarter of the national (Mexican) production. Cattle ranching and mining are the other major producers in our state. The majority of the foreigners in Durango, apart from the teachers on the ASD staff, tend to be involved in the mining industry. There are other large companies and industries located in Durango that contribute greatly to the city and states economy.

The State of Durango has a population of around 1.75 million people spread throughout the state, with, just under, 700,000 living in the capital city of Durango. The state has a rather diverse population of people living here. There are small colonies of Mennonites living and ranching here, and are well known for their cheese. There are various indigenous tribal groups inhabiting the state consisting of several thousand Huichols, Coras, and Tepehuanes making up the majority of this population.

The City of Durango.

The City of Durango was officially founded in 1563 by the Spanish priest Francisco de Ibarra. While the city was originally named Guadiana, it was later renamed Durango in honor of Sr. Ibarra’s home village in Spain. Early in its history, Durango was the major controlling city of what are now Northern Mexico and the Southwest portion of the United States, as far north as San Francisco, California. It is because of this former political influence and territorial power that you now see the beautiful parks, wide tree lined boulevards, old governmental buildings, large central plaza, and its grand twin spire cathedral located in the center of the historical district. ...More
